Part II
Moüsch
Chapter 1
Meanwhile
The first time I met the Nosferatu Chief Incanter - referred to in Moüsch’s journals as Grue - I had to employ most of my self-restraint not to break his jaw. I now understand this is quite a common reaction with this particular Vampire who is very old but very rude.
I was the young Knight who was feted as the best leader the Vampire nation had seen in centuries: (jointly) responsible for stopping Corbeau’s Horde, for uniting the Albion Vampires and the Faies, revolutionising aerial combat tactics ... and so on and so forth. In fairness, I was probably quite full of myself and it probably showed.
By the time it came to my debriefing with him, I was tired of discussing logistics and military strategy with the Eltern and the Keep military command, and so I attempted to move things onto a footing he might be more interested in.
I mentioned the advent of the Aquarian Age.
‘You’ve been talking to that imbecile Picus, no doubt,’ he said, staring at me from a great height. I bridled at this: Picus was only recently buried at the Tor in Albion and then, as now, I would not have been able to name a braver and more talented Vampire. He was perhaps the sole reason most of my small army was still alive.
‘I buried him with the full honours he deserved,’ I replied stiffly. ‘I hope I am around when he rises again.’
‘No you don’t.’
If my stare made Grue regret his tone or in any way uncomfortable, he did not show it - I’ve made battle-hardened warriors squirm but it didn’t seem to embarrass or frighten him in the least. ‘What? I ... why?’
‘If that irresponsible madman gets out again, you can be sure events have gone irreparably wrong.’
‘Like the dawning of a new age?’ I had a feeling this would goad him but I was also genuinely curious.
‘It’s not a change in the weather, you know. New ages don’t just happen from one day to the next. We could have been in the Aquarius cycle for the last hundred years and no-one would know. What do you expect - clarion calls, legions of angels, darkened skies and voices ... bunting? Anyway, why are we even discussing this? Shouldn’t you be out and about, killing someone over something?’
Raptor, Dispatches
So it’s me again.
Moüsch, that is.
About the time the Albion War was finally reaching its five hundred-year-old conclusion in such dramatic fashion, I was safe and sound, as was my habit, in the Keep.
Older, a little wiser, still lame. But alive. Ta ... Da ... (note to any future editor, I trust you will not add exclamation marks - I left them out on purpose).
In the time since I had come back from our adventures I have described in the second of these volumes, I had been living the quiet life; writing my memoires and collecting those of other notable Vampires that were to make up the bulk of the material in these tales of our race you are now reading.
